Location Details:
SOPHIA is based in Marina Zeas in Athens.
From our base in Marina Zeas in Athens you may explore two major sailing areas in Greece. The Argo-Saronic Gulf and the famous Cycladic Islands. Islands in the Argo Saronic Gulf are lesser known to International tourists and are a true hidden gem. They feature beautiful sandy and pebble beaches that are often surrounded by fragrant pine forests. Being rather small in size, the islands do not have a lot of car traffic; on Hydra and Spetses, cars are prohibited entirely and many horse carriage or donkeys can be found on the streets instead. Sailing conditions are ideal and safe even for first time charterers, because the cruising area is very well protected and predominately sheltered from strong winds.
The Cyclades is the most famous island group in the Aegean Sea. It is characterised by its unique barren landscape with isolated chapels, traditional white and blue architecture, gorgeous sandy beaches, folk music and fests, and its warm and hospitable people. The Cyclades island group consists of 39 islands which lie in close proximity to one another, making them the perfect yachting destination. Sailing conditions are the most favourable from the beginning of June to the middle of July and in September, as winds around the Cyclades islands can get pretty strong towards the end of July and August. Those winds are called "Meltemi" and blow from the north and northwest with forces reaching up to 7-8 BFT.
